Proctoring is an online method for exam supervision. A candidate can take an exam anytime and anywhere. The proctor (invigilator) monitors the exam live or post-exam via the computer and check the identity of the candidates.
Taking a proctored exam saves time, travel expenses, and the costs of an exam center. Moreover, while taking online proctoring services, privacy is protected as per the new GDPR. As the examinee sits in familiar surroundings, it boosts morale while managing the exam. It is similar to offline proctoring and safeguards the exam integrity as the activities get monitored via webcam during the examination.
More educational institutions and companies are adopting proctored exams as against the traditional exam(s). The companies are adopting online proctoring for their recruitment process and the early adopters include Amazon, Cognizant, Honeywell, Walmart Labs, among others.
To lead the recruitment drive, there are three ways in which online proctoring services can be obtained. They are as follows:
- Live online proctoring
- Recorded proctoring
- Advanced automated proctoring
Three ways to online proctoring for recruitment
To lead the recruitment drive, employers must choose an online proctoring service provider suitable for the company. A few points like areas the company wants to assess the candidate, skill level the position requires, and the authenticity of the candidate must be aligned before providing the exam.
Live online proctoring
Here, a qualified proctor monitors the candidate through live audio and video feeds. The proctors are trained to ensure the authenticity of the candidate. They also look for red flags such as suspicious facial movements, eye movements, or the appearance of the unverified device. In such circumstances, the proctor can either shut down the exam or notify the company.
The proctor can handle 32 candidates at a time. Both the proctor and candidates from any location get connected over the Internet.
The disadvantage is scarcity in the availability of the proctor, like an offline proctoring. It is not scalable for the same reason.
Here, the activities of the candidate during the exam is recorded and played back by the proctor to look for any suspicious behavior. It requires no scheduling of either the candidate or the proctor. The candidate can take the exam at any convenient time and likewise, the proctor can review the exam. However, this method is expensive as it requires human intervention and it is expensive to scale.
Advanced automated proctoring
This advanced form of proctoring requires no human intervention. It records the candidate’s activities and monitors the feed for red flags indicating malpractice (if any). It eliminates manual intervention and is scalable as compared to other above-mentioned methods.
The online proctors can secure the integrity of the exam by limiting the candidate logins to specific IP addresses and blocking the copy-paste option.
The final note
Online proctoring tools maintain the integrity of the assessment process. As a result, companies can assess and recruit talent beyond geographical constraints. With its reliable safety and stringent features, online recruitment would soon become the norm of the recruitment process.
